Antique Tiger Oak Desk Secretary Bookcase 65x29x19

  
Measures 29" wide at top molding x 651/4" tall x 19 deep at base. Weight is 100 pounds approximate. Very early 1900s open Oak Secretary in solid quarter-sawn oak. No veneer on this cabinet. This is a genuine unrestored survivor that has never been repaired, re-glued, refinished or modified. The cabriole legs are undamaged and unrepaired. Cabinet has never been stored in a barn or basement and has never been musty, mildewed or damaged by insects.

There are no old book smells in the enclosed bookcase. The cabinet has all of its original hardware, original working brass lock with 2 keys, original wavy door glass and brass swivel casters that roll and rotate as they should.

12 of the original adjustable 16 shelf pins and 4 replacement pins. The 4 shelves are adjustable at 2 increments. The 4 tiger oak (both sides) shelves are original, pristine, reversible and do NOT have plate grooves on either side. The top shelves are 8 1/4" x 26" and the bottom shelves are 9 1/4" x 26".

In the bottom section of the bookcase are 2 cup hooks which may or may not be original and may have held a curtain rod to conceal the lower shelves. The cabinet retains its original dark satin finish that is not crazed or alligatored.

There are 2 scratches on the left side of the cabinet and one finish abrasion on the right side (probably a hand truck strap applied to tightly). This minor blemish is in the finish and did not harm the wood.

The solid desk top is excellent with one old water stain, and to the left of that are 2 light perpendicular scratches along with some other assorted minor. Flea bites that will not show up in the photos.

There are 2 dove-tailed pull out drawers between the desktop and the bookcase. The drawer interiors are excellent with no scratches or ink stains. The interior back of the cabinet is burl maple plywood and in excellent condition - and an indication of a quality made piece of furniture. The back panel of the cabinet is excellent and structurally sound with a few of the usual veneer blisters that should be expected of a cabinet of this vintage.

Probably one of the finest open secretaries you will find. This cabinet style is either one or a very few of-a-kind remaining anywhere. It does have a couple of "character marks" that should be anticipated after 120 years. Perfection is in the eye of the beholder - we try our hardest to provide an honest description pointing out all the good points and blemishes that we see.
