Exceptionally clean Oak Secretary with open Bookcase and oversize writing surface. This is a "3" stack unit which includes the base, the lid and the cabinet. The model of the unit is "The Herkimer" produced around 1905.

The unit will accept additional stacks at the top of the cabinet if you can find them. This is all solid quarter-sawn oak construction and the only veneer is both sides of the generous size desk lid which is unscratched and undamaged.

There is an older, very small, veneer repair at the lower left exterior of the lid, where it meets the drawer. This repair is tight and stable and will probably not show up in the photos. The inside of the lid and desk surface are unscratched, gouged or stained. The lid opens and closes correctly and both drawers operate and close smoothly. The unit has 2 deep drawers, letter rack, animal paw feet and all original solid brass hardware, the knife hinges work properly. The small letter drawers have solid brass knobs with mother of pearl inlay. The top gallery board is removable. There are no ink stains in the drawers and no potted plant marks on the top.

The cabinet has never been insect damaged, musty, mildewed or stored in a barn or basement. There are no old book smells in the drawers or bookshelf. The oak plywood back is original and unblistered. The desk lid has a non-working original lock and key. The only modification to the cabinet are 4 new replacement casters that are safe for any hard floor surface.

There is a small chip on the rear left cabinet bottom (where the cabinet meets the base), that is too small to show in the photos. There is a stabilizer brace that was added underneath the rear of base about 50+ years ago. The stabilizer is not visible from outside the cabinet. The base is strong and tight and has no structural issues and the unit rolls across the floor like it is supposed to.

Assembled, the cabinet is 64.5" tall x 34 1/4" wide x 14 deep. Weight is about 75 pounds. The bookcase section is 12" deep x 32.5" long x 12 1/4 tall and will hold oversize books. This unit will break down into 3 pieces for transport and will easily fit in a small SUV. Cabinet is about 115 years old, it is refinished and in remarkably good condition, testimony to a well cared for and gentle life.

Cabinet had been on a local family farm for over 100 years. This is an antique barrister unit, rather uncommon - it is not brand new and does not pretend to be.
