Karges Furniture Tiger Oak Bed & Dresser + Mirror Elaborate Carved Detail 1890

  

Exceptional antique bed and dresser set by high end maker Karges Furniture. Still in business today as a luxury furniture brand, you can see that a tradition of quality, over-the-top design has always been the company's mantra. One of the highest end makers in furniture today. This set was made in the later part of the 19th century.

The bed is full size, but still manages to be monumental. Dramatically sawn oak provides a backdrop for elaborate applied carved oak detail. A female bust is at the center on both the head and footboards, surrounded by scrolls, flowers and swags. The headboard is topped with a carved crest. The footboard has a heavy round cylinder at the top, set on a stepped flat base.

The feet are stylized, flattened paws. The dresser base is low, with three upper drawers over one wide lower one. The brasses all appear to be original, but the lower drawer is missing both handles/pulls. Fairly easy to replace that part as the plates are original and intact. The mirror is beveled, and original to the piece.

Like the bed, there is a female bust at top, with more of the same applied carvings and crest. Structurally perfect - no issues with loose joints or repairs of any kind. Aside from the missing pulls, there are a few tiny missing bits of carving - one piece of scrolling on the top left drawer, and two or three very small bits on the headboard. Very minor and east to replace, if desired. No other issues, no nicks, dings and virtually no wear whatsoever.

Dimensions: Dresser is 91.5" tall, 54" wide and 25" deep overall (the top measures 23.5" deep). Headboard is 84" tall, 56" wide and 3 deep at the top crest. The footboard is 42" tall, 56" wide and 5.5 deep at the top rail.

The sideboards are 72 long. The slots on the head/footboard will easily accommodate a modern full size mattress width - however, even with the extra space provided by the footboard's interior it will be 1.5 inches short for a modern full. Side rails can be extended by most cabinetmakers, etc.
