Wonderful American tall fluted column fireplace mantel. The wood is outstanding tiger oak. Each column is topped by capital design.Nice oval mirror you generally only see oval mirrors on better quality pieces since the beveling had to be done by hand. Carving at the 4 "corners" of the mirror is a special and slightly unusual touch. Has the original paper label from the Philadelphia Company of Alcott, Ross, & Scully.
This company may have only been in business with this name between 1895 to 1902. There looks like there might be a date written in pencil of 1897?It was refinished many years ago. Some light wear can be seen: water mark on shelf, slight darkening from smoke where appropriate, and some nicks on the top. However, considering the age in very good condition. Currently there are oak "wings" attached to the sides. This is how the mantels were designed to be adjustable in overall width. You can add larger wings if needed. Large fireplace opening makes it more adaptable to modern construction. It was professionally refinished several decades ago before the last owner's use. The wear is normal and appropriate to an item of this age. There are reflections in the photographs. Dont miss out on this really wonderful item! Height - 86 1/2 inch. Length - 41 3/8 inch.
